Matt’s Musings: How the Rest of the Season Will Play Out

Out of curiosity, I decided to run a simple simulation to see how the rest of the NHL season will play out with respect to the Eastern Conference. This is what I did:

1)     Find out each team’s record over the last 10 games
2)     Find the average number of points each team received per game over the last 10 games
3)     Multiply this average by the remaining games left for each team
4)     Add this result (points the team will get over the last leg of the season, based on last 10 game) to their points to date
5)     Rank the teams and see who makes the playoffs.
Results:

Granted, New Jersey is highly unlikely to keep up their pace (they are 9-0-1 over their last 10) and teams that bolstered up at the trade deadline are likely to boost their production assuming that their additions pay dividends.
