|USC QB, Kessler in action|
Last weekend in week 10 of the 2013 NCAA Football season, there were a lot of highly ranked teams on bye weeks; however, there was no shortage of great games to watch.
Last Saturday afternoon the Michigan State Spartans played host to their rivals, the Michigan Wolverines as they handed them a tough 29-6 loss and improved to 9-1 on the season. Oklahoma State went into Texas to play the Texas Tech Red Raiders and the Cowboys handed Texas Tech a hefty 52-34 loss. Week 10 also had the Florida State Seminoles host the Miami Hurricanes and handed their ACC rivals a 41-14 loss.
As the season progresses each week, games become more and more important and several teams have to earn crucial wins if they want to end up in a great bowl game.
This week there are some great match-ups with huge implications on the line. Here are the major games to look out for.
#12 Oklahoma Sooners vs. #5 Baylor Bears
The Sooners are coming off a much needed bye week after they earned a hard fought victory against Texas Tech in week 9. The Sooners continue to be led by QB Blake Bell who seems to have control of the Oklahoma offense. RB Brennan Clayand WR Jalen Saunders are also great leaders on the offensive side of the ball for the Sooners.
The Baylor Bears are also coming off a bye week after they put a 59-14 thumping on the Kansas Jayhawks in week 9. QB Bryce Petty, RB Lache Seastrunk, WR Tevin Reese and WR Antwan Goodley lead the high-powered Baylor offense. The Baylor Bears have put up 70 or more points in four games this season as their offence ranks first overall in the nation in terms of efficiency.
If Oklahoma wants to see any success in this game, they will need come out fast and score as quickly as possible, if they want to keep up with the Baylor offense. The Sooners will also need their 10th overall ranked defense to come up and make plays that limit the time Baylor has on offense.
Look for Baylor to come out firing on all cylinders as they try to bury the Sooners early in the game.
Game Details: Kickoff on Thursday, Nov. 7th at 7:30pm at Floyd Casey Stadium in Waco, Texas.
#2 Oregon Ducks vs. #6 Stanford Cardinals
The Oregon Ducks are coming off a bye week after they had earned a tough victory against their PAC-12 rivals the UCLA Bruins in week 9 on their way to improving their record to 8-0. QB Marcus Mariota, RB’s De’Anthony Thomas, Byron Marshall, Thomas Tyner, WR’s Josh Huffand Bralon Addison lead the Ducks on the offensive side of the ball.
Stanford is also coming off of a bye week after they narrowly beat out the Oregon State Beavers in week 9 and improved their record to 7-1. QB Kevin Hogan, WR Ty Montgomery and RB Tyler Gaffneylead the offensive attack for Stanford.
If Stanford wants to be successful in this game, they will have to rely on QB Kevin Hogan to get that passing game going early and try to match the tempo of the high octane Oregon Ducks. Stanford’s defense will need to try their best to make big stops throughout the game or else the Ducks will make them pay.
If Oregon can get their explosive offence going early and start pilling up the points on Stanford they can come out on top in this PAC-12 tilt.
Oregon is seeking revenge against Stanford after the Ducks were upset at home last year against the Cardinal.
Game Details: Kickoff on Thursday, Nov. 7th at 9:00pm at Stanford Stadium in Stanford, California.
#10 LSU Tigers vs. #1 Alabama Crimson Tide
Like the other four teams that have been previously mentioned, the LSU Tigers are coming off a bye week as well, after they had earned a victory over Furman by the score of 48-16 in week 9 as they improved to 7-2 on the season. QB Zach Mettenberger, RB Jeremy Hill, WR’s Odell Beckham and Jarvis Landry lead the LSU attack on offense.
Alabama is also coming off of a bye week after they had hosted the Tennessee Volunteers on week 9 and beat them by a score of 45-10 as they improved to 8-0 on the season. QB AJ McCarron, RB T.J. Yeldon, WR’s Amari Cooper and Kevin Norwood lead the solid and efficient Crimson Tide offense.
If LSU want to come out on top in this game, they will need RB Jeremy Hill to have a great day on the ground as well as a very efficient day in the air with the passing game, as they limit the amount of turnovers and three and outs against a very dangerous Alabama defense. LSU will need to their defense to attack the QB and try to limit the amount of production from AJ McCarron on offense.
Look for the Alabama defense to make big plays and keep that LSU offense off the field for a good portion of the game.
Game Details: Kickoff on Saturday, Nov. 9th at 8:00pm at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
#16 UCLA Bruins vs. Arizona Wildcats
Last weekend the UCLA Bruins played host to the Colorado Buffaloes, where they earned a much needed, 43-23 victory and improved their record to 6-2 on the season. QB Brett Hundley, WR’s Shaquelle Evans and Devin Fuller lead the Bruins on the offensive side of the ball.
Last week the Wildcats eared a 33-28 win over the PAC-12 Rivals the Cal Golden Bears, as they also improved their record to 6-2 on the season. QB B.J. Denker, RB Ka’Deem Carey and WR Nate Philips lead the Arizona Wildcats on offense.
If Arizona can come out quickly and establish a great running game against the Bruins, they could be able to pull off the upset against UCLA. The Wildcats will need to remain mistake free and have their defense come up big, as they try to stop Hundley and the Bruins. Look for UCLA LB Anthony Barr and the rest of the Bruins defense to swarm the line of scrimmage and pressure the QB into making mistakes as they look to improve to 7-2 on the season.
Game Details: Kickoff on Saturday, Nov. 9th at 10:00pm at Arizona Stadium in Tucson, Arizona.
