My first ever sports related memory as a kid was the Brazil vs Italy penalty kicks that took place at the 1994 World Cup. I came to Canada in 1994-a couple of weeks prior to the final, actually-so these penalty kicks had an even bigger impact on me while growing up.
All I remember was being in absolute tears-Niagara Falls-esque tears-when Roberto Baggio stepped up and missed a penalty kick he had to score to keep Italy alive. I have no ties to Italy whatsoever, so the fact that Italy winning the World Cup meant so much to me is still a mystery to this day. As my dad looked at me, I don’t think that he could believe a six year old boy was crying because of a soccer (football) match when he didn’t really know much about the game, rules etc.
This Brazil team, to me, was one of the best that I have ever seen. Romario, Cafu, Dunga, Taffarel etc. were all world class (maybe exclude Taffarel) at one point or another in their careers. A young Ronaldo was also featured in this Brazilian squad.
