One for the future: Daniele Rugani

When you think of Juventus, you think of all the great defenders who have worn the famous black and white stripped jersey such as: Chiellini, Cannavaro, Thuram or Zambrotta, just to name a few.  We could be adding another name to that list, if he can live up to the hype that surrounds him.

Daniele Rugani is a 21 year old centre back who currently plays for the Italian giants.  Rugani came to Juventus from Empoli in 2015, where he made close to 80 appearances and scored a handful of goals.  Since his signing, Rugani has not featured in the Juve line-up much due to the logjam of great centre backs that the team currently possesses.  Learning from guys like Chiellini, Barzagli and Bonucci will only help the 21 year old as he tries to breakthrough to the first team.

Rugani is excellent in the air, so it makes sense that a lot of his chances on the offensive end come from set pieces.  When defending, Rugani has great instinct on what the attacking player is going to do with the ball, thus breaking up plenty of attacks.  If there is one weakness he has, it is tackling.  Often times the attacking player is faster than Rugani, which causes him to mistime tackles.  With consistent playing time, this is a problem that could be fixed easily.

What’s next for Rugani? Just stay patient. The starting defenders that Juventus has on its roster are over the age of 28, so you would think that Rugani’s time to shine could be very soon. I do not see Juventus loaning him out, instead they keep him on their roster and let him develop with the best defensive core in Italy.

Daniele Rugani has featured for Italy at every youth level from U17-U21.
