One for the future: Manuel Locatelli

While most 18-20 year olds spend time on loan at various smaller clubs, so to say, AC Milan’s Manuel Locatelli has been given a chance with the first team and he has not disappointed.

Locatelli got his first start for Milan in the final match of the 2015/2016 season. Milan lost 3:1 on that day, but it was a big moment for the 18 year old wonderkid. Milan currently sits in third position in Serie A and Locatelli has been a bright spot for I Rossoneri. The biggest moment in his short career was scoring the game winning goal vs. Italian giants, Juventus back in September.

What’s next?

Now that he has become a focal point in the Milan line-up, Locatelli will need to learn and improve on the fly. His passing percentage is only 82.4%, which is average for a midfielder; you want to see him around 86-89%. Once again, he is still only 18 years of age and with the veterans in this Milan side, he will surely get better. Even though he is a good tackler/interceptor of the ball now, Manuel will need to improve this aspect of his game as well, especially if he plays the defensive midfielder role throughout his career.

The videos I have seen of Locatelli, remind me a lot of Montolivo-good tackler and a good passer of the ball. One of his biggest weaknesses is duals in the air, which he will need to get better at, if he wants to establish himself as one of the best midfielders in the Serie A. Scoring a clutch goal like the one vs Juventus earlier in the season can go a long way for this kid’s confidence. It is important that they keep developing him along and surround him with players he can learn from, which Vincenzo Montella has done fairly well so far.
